There Is No Rock Like Our God: Shout Amen!

there is no rock like our god

I can confidently say, “There is no rock like our God” (my God). I haven’t always been able to do that even though I Samuel 2:2 states that the Lord is holy and there’s no one like Him.

Recently, God made that scripture personal to me and a friend. We live on two different continents. God instructed both of us to pick up specific rocks (that’s another story). My rock constantly reminds me of how awesome God is and there’s nothing He can’t do. God is my rock!

My friend sees His rock as evidence of God’s goodness and the 12-stone memorial in the Bible.

Joshua 4:5-7 (AMP)

And Joshua said to them, “Cross over again to the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of the Jordan, and each of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel,  so that this may be a sign among you; when your children ask later, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ then you shall say to them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall become a memorial for Israel forever.”

We both have different rocks in size and color but we immediately agreed that “there is no rock like our God!”

Rocks are hard. They’re good objects to build foundations, make tools, or use for other purposes. Plus, they never wear out.

And for Christians, a rock reminds us of how easy it is to turn away from the rock of salvation, Jesus, to something else. We do this when praying and nothing happens or relationships that get worse instead of better. When we turn to substitutes in place of God, they aren’t solid foundations because they’re counterfeits.

Scriptures: There Is No Rock Like Our God

The first thing you notice when encircling your fingers around a rock is its strength. Holding a rock reminds me of how strong God is. So does scripture.

Psalm 18:2 – The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and the One who rescues me; My God, my rock and strength in whom I trust and take refuge; My shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower—my stronghold.

Psalm 78:35 – And they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer.

2 Samuel 22:32 – For who is God, besides the Lord? And who is a rock, besides our God?

Deuteronomy 32:31 – For their rock is not like our Rock, Even our enemies themselves judge this.

Deuteronomy 32:4 – “The Rock! His work is perfect, For all His ways are just; A God of faithfulness without iniquity (injustice), Just and upright is He.

Psalm 31:2-3 – Incline Your ear to me, deliver me quickly; Be my rock of refuge, And a strong fortress to save me. Yes, You are my rock and my fortress; For Your name’s sake You will lead me and guide me.

2 Samuel 22:47 – The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock, And exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation.

Isaiah 17:10 – Because you [Judah] have forgotten the God of your salvation and have not remembered the Rock of your Stronghold—Therefore you plant lovely plants and set the grounds with vine slips of a strange god

Matthew 21:42 –Jesus asked them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: The [very] Stone which the builders rejected and threw away, Has become the chief Cornerstone; This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous and wonderful in our eyes’?

Isaiah 28:16 – Therefore the Lord God says this, “Listen carefully, I am laying in Zion a Stone, a tested Stone, A precious Cornerstone for the [secure] foundation, firmly placed. He who believes [who trusts in, relies on, and adheres to that Stone] will not be disturbed or give way [in sudden panic].

There Is No Rock Like Our God in Your Life

If there was a time when people needed security, it’s now. Pandemics, floods, hurricanes, and evil people eat away at our resolve.

We feel like running and hiding.

As a Christian, I’ve come to know one thing. In the darkest of times, God is the only refuge I can count on for hope and strength. Everything else is sinking and shifting sand. There is no God like our God!

Here are ways to make God your rock.

  • Trust in His promises: The Bible relays what God wants for us. Do this, don’t do that isn’t a set of religious laws but a blueprint to follow when there are too many wrong choices.
  • Accept Jesus as Lord and Savior: After believing in things, people, money, etc., you’ll eventually see how weak they are compared to being safely anchored to Jesus who died once for all of mankind’s sins.
  • Emulate God’s standards of holiness: Focusing on God’s truth (His Word), practicing holiness, and going after God with everything you have builds God’s character inside you.
  • See God as Deliverer: He is the life-giver in every detail of your life (when you let Him).
  • Devote your life to God: My name, Betsy, means “consecrated to God.” That meaning became a reality in the last 5 years after decades of escaping God’s call and will on my life. Now, it’s a joy to serve Him but it wasn’t always so.
  • Get rid of religion: Most of us have idols that take the place of God. Practicing religion instead of having a relationship with God is a stronghold that keeps us from experiencing God as our strong fortress.
  • Build your Christian foundation on love: God wants us to love Him and others. He quickly becomes our rock when love is our aim because that’s what the Gospel message is based on.

Sometimes God shakes everything so we turn to Him but He’s unshakable! Any substitute for God is puny as best. “Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever” (Psalm 125:1). There is no one like our God!
