Is Hell a Real Place of Torment? Yes

is hell a real place of torment

I’ll ask the question again. Is hell a real place of torment?

According to Jesus, hell is real, and you don’t want to go there. Jesus preaches the truth about this home for the wicked. People choose to deny its existence and still do.

They don’t have time for trivia. Torment, agony, misery—hell doesn’t suit their lifestyles. Hell is a perpetual fire and a dreadful abyss of death. Doesn’t that scare the living daylights out of you? It does me.

There’s no turning back once you decide, until your dying breath, to reject Jesus. That settles the account between you and Him forever. When you tell God you don’t want Him or His Son, He honors your request and doesn’t offer a bargaining chip.

Is Hell a Real Place of Torment? Yes, and Religion Won’t Save You

Jesus gives a tongue lashing to the religious leaders of His day, the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Mathew 23:33 – “You serpents! You generation of vipers! How can you escape the judgment of hell?”

You wouldn’t expect muckety-mucks to miss heaven. But chances are they did unless they let Jesus change their hearts.

A family Bible on your coffee table, a picture of Jesus on the wall, and a candle burning in His honor don’t mean you’re saved. Look at the religious leaders Jesus called serpents. They appear Godly on the outside but are filthy on the inside.

When you say you’re a Christian and don’t acknowledge Jesus as Lord and Savior, you get a one-way ticket to a blazing inferno. So is there any proof that hell is real?

Is Hell a Real Place of Torment? Yes, It’s Hot

This scripture below reveals that no one can reach you in hell. Even if they try, a great chasm separates the two places.

You’ll never see your loved ones if they live in heaven and you don’t. A burning fire torments you beyond your most fanciful dream.

Luke 16:19–26 – “It came to pass that the beggar died and angels carried him to Abraham’s presence. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham from a distance and Lazarus in his presence. So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For this flame torments me. “But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things. Lazarus in like manner evil things. But now he is comforted and you are tormented. And besides all this, between us and you, there is a great gulf.  So that those who would pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.

What’s even scarier is the Bible describes hell as a fiery oven, unquenchable fire, pit of darkness, the lake of fire, and burning wind. Two other words come to mind: endless and unbearable. That scripture answers the title of this post, “Is hell a real place of torment?”

More Proof That Hell Is a Real Place of Torment

Mathew 13:41–43 -”The Son of Man shall send out His angels, and they shall gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who do evil, and will throw them into a fiery furnace. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.

When hell is your home, lower your expectations. You won’t play golf or sing Amazing Grace. The “smoke of their torment” ascends forever and ever and there’s no “rest day or night.” People there don’t have a regular time to go to bed and rest as they do now. The phrase “smoke of their torment” implies that bodies burn continually.

The body when dead normally decomposes. Jesus said, If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched,  where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:43-44).

Jesus quotes from the Old Testament, in Isaiah 66:24. Normally worms eat flesh as it rots, but not so in hell. The word translated worm in these passages actually means maggot. People in hell are in a constant state of decay. Jesus delivers a clear message.

Hell dwellers endure non-stop suffering. Decaying and dying never stop as flames engulf the body. Thoughts of despair would gnaw away at the mind like a spiny-headed worm. When you choose hell as your home, you never see light or find a way out to freedom.

Is Hell a Real Place For All Eternity?

Jesus doesn’t hide the truth about this awful place. He’s upfront because He doesn’t want people to perish. In the scripture below, He describes what to expect when people don’t believe Jesus is God’s son and He died for them.

Mathew 25:31–46- “When the Son of Man (Jesus) comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. Before Him will be gathered all nations, and He will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates his sheep from the goats. He will set the sheep at His right hand, but the goats at the left.

Then the King (Jesus) will say to those at His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave Me food, I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in. I was naked and you clothed Me, and I was sick and you visited Me. And, I was in prison and you came to Me.’

Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? And when did we see You sick or in prison and come to You?’

The King will answer, ‘Truly I say to you, as you have done it for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you have done it for Me.’

What Happens Next?

Then He will say to those at the left hand. ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave Me no food, I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink.  I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, I was naked and you did not clothe Me.  I was sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

Then they also will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not serve You?’ He will answer, ‘Truly I say to you, as you did it not for one of the least of these, you did it not for Me.’And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Revelation 20:15 – “Anyone whose name is not written in the Book of Life is cast into the lake of fire.”
