Is Jesus a Superhero? 4 Reasons He’s Not
Breaking news! Is Jesus a superhero? No!
As humans, we like crime-fighting, big bad, superintellectual heroes. Superman, Spider-Man, and Wonder Woman help people. These transient superheroes anchor humans when problems come, howbeit from a fantasy world perspective. Men and women superheroes tinker with reality by seeming invincible. In truth, they’re high-demand fodder for comic books and other merchandise.
For a real-life Christian, you may say Jesus is my superhero. Actually, He’s your go-to, divine agent for spiritual and earthly help. He offers salvation of mind, body, and spirit. What anyone receives from Him is directly proportionate to their level of faith.
Is Jesus a Superhero? No, He’s the Gospel’s Representative
Jesus could give superhero pointers to make-believe champions, but He wins souls. He majors in providing spiritual answers to life’s problems. When you say “take the wheel Jesus”, He demonstrates how to live in freedom and go into the world as His ambassador.
Jesus Christ or Jehovah which means salvation came as The Messiah to die for all people. He ushered in His ministry by delivering a message of freedom (Isaiah 61:1-2) to hearers in His hometown. They knew Him as Jesus of Nazareth. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”
In His ministry, He relies on The Holy Spirit to perform miracles such as feeding thousands of people, raising the dead, and other supernatural wonders. Salvation is His most amazing feat. Even so, He lived inside a human body. He understands the pain, confrontations, and agonies that you and I face when living as Christians in a broken world.
Is Jesus a Superhero? No, He’s the Lord of His People
Jesus is your best friend. You don’t buddy up to Him because He’s the hero of your life. Jesus is your advocate when the enemy comes against you in condemnation. He died on your behalf, rose from the dead, and shed His blood so you could receive eternal life when you call Him Lord.
Jesus is not one-dimensional, the way a superhero is. He embodies all of creation as noted in Colossians 16. ” Christ himself is the Creator who made everything in heaven and earth, the things we can see and the things we can’t; the spirit world with its kings and kingdoms, its rulers and authorities; all were made by Christ for his own use and glory.”
Additionally, in Colossians 1:19-20, the scripture reminds you and me of the lordship of Jesus. “For God wanted all of himself to be in his Son. It was through what his Son did that God cleared a path for everything to come to him—all things in heaven and on earth—for Christ’s death on the cross has made peace with God for all by his blood (Living Bible translation).”
In verses 21 and 22, scripture states we were all alienated from God. Jesus became the gateway to leave sin behind and to open the door to friendship, relationship, and lordship while in the presence of a holy God.
Is Jesus a Superhero? No, He’s Your Savior
Our Lord and Savior is the only one who could die on your behalf because sin overtook the world. God’s plan of love was to rescue His people from Satan’s grasp. Eternal death belonged to Satan until Jesus took possession of death by dying at Calvary. That solitary act of atonement is a lot to comprehend.
Nonetheless, people remain enemies of God by not believing in what Jesus did for them. In a way, I understand. How can anyone relate to what happened to Jesus?
His captors nail his hands and feet to a cross never knowing that Jesus came to take on every sin and disease of mankind. Even worse for Jesus, He is separated from His Father for six hours. Conversely, superheroes represent what we can do in our own power in the natural realm. But without Christ, we are powerless in a spiritual world.
Jesus lived on earth and understands your shortcomings, temptations, and countless opportunities to mess up. Yet, Jesus gives second, third, and more chances. He offers grace and mercy until you and I get it right. Life with Jesus is not a one-shot occasion, where you either get it right or you’re toast. The plan of redemption and sacrifice gives everyone the same chance and equal footing for a lasting covenant with the one true God.
And the 4th Reason: He’s Your Covenant Maker
Your relationship with Jesus is life-saving. Without salvation, there is no hope. God talks about having a covenant with His people from the very beginning of Genesis. Throughout the Old Testament, He makes a covenant with Abraham and succeeding generations, especially Israel. Once Jesus ratifies the covenant with His blood, there is no need to use the blood of bulls and goats.
The precious blood of Jesus pardons, accepts, and adopts all believers to eternal life. Jesus brings you into the Kingdom of God where you inherit spiritual blessings in heavenly places. You are in covenant with and belong to Him. This was prophesied by Jeremiah in Chapter 31:33 regarding the people of Israel. “But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, says the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
Where does that leave the Gentiles? God grafts them into the Body of Christ. Romans 11:11-12 – “Did they (Israel) stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious. But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their full inclusion bring!”
So, is Jesus a superhero? Jesus is in covenant with all people when they believe and accept Him as Lord, Savior, Covenant-Maker, and Advocate. As far as superheroes go, Jesus doesn’t mind that you enjoy the antics of Captain America and Batman. I’m guessing He likes them, too.
