Importance of Pleasing God: My Top 10 Reasons

importance of pleasing god

The importance of pleasing God is understated until you realize the need to do so. An aha moment convinced me how important He is.

A “friend” used to see me as a daughter of the king until I delivered a message grounded in God’s wisdom that made their skin crawl. Almost instantly, I turned into the “wicked witch of the West.”

Their reaction started a chain of events in my heart. First, I teared up because I had interceded for them for months. It didn’t take long to realize I meant nothing to them. Then, I thought, “So what?” My goal is pleasing God, not man. Why should I bow to a person because I delivered a message they didn’t like?

That one incident got me thinking about why I have a burning desire to please God even when He loves me just as I am. Take time to meditate on these Bible verses about pleasing God.

Scriptures Describing the Importance of Pleasing God

Ephesians 5:8-10 (AMP)

For once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of Light [live as those who are native-born to the Light] (for the fruit [the effect, the result] of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), trying to learn [by experience] what is pleasing to the Lord [and letting your lifestyles be examples of what is most acceptable to Him—your behavior expressing gratitude to God for your salvation].

Galatians 1:10

Am I now trying to win the favor and approval of men, or of God? Or am I seeking to please someone? If I were still trying to be popular with men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.

Hebrews 11:6

But without faith, it is impossible to [walk with God and] please Him, for whoever comes [near] to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He rewards those who [earnestly and diligently] seek Him.

Psalm 51:16-17

For You do not delight in sacrifice, or else I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. My [only] sacrifice [acceptable] to God is a broken spirit; A broken and contrite heart [broken with sorrow for sin, thoroughly penitent], such, O God, You will not despise.

Romans 8:8

And those who are in the flesh [living a life that caters to sinful appetites and impulses] cannot please God.

Colossians 1:9-10

For this reason, since the day we heard about it, we have not stopped praying for you, asking [specifically] that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom [with insight into His purposes], and in understanding [of spiritual things], so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord [displaying admirable character, moral courage, and personal integrity], to [fully] please Him in all things, bearing fruit in every good work and steadily growing in the knowledge of God [with deeper faith, clearer insight and fervent love for His precepts]

Those scriptures regarding how to please God stir my heart to find ways to enjoy Him. Plus, I’m happier when I do.

Importance of Pleasing God: My 10 Reasons

  1. God and I have a love relationship. He loves people and is pleased when I love and serve others. My outward display of His love indicates I enjoy serving and obeying Him.
  2. Because I want to please God, I find out through scripture the best way to do that. Scripture shows me that bearing fruit and growing in God pleases Him.
  3. The greatest day of my life was when I accepted Jesus and the Godhead (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) as mine. I’m grateful for eternal salvation and show them in my thoughts, words, and actions.
  4. To be a bondservant of Christ (totally) means I want to please my Lord and Savior.
  5. God will distance Himself from me if I don’t face sin and repent. I endeavor to keep my heart pure so I don’t become callous and uncaring.
  6. God wants the best for me and it isn’t entertaining fleshly (ungodly) thoughts and deeds. I won’t walk on His sure path because I open the door to the enemy and his influence. I can’t stress the importance of staying spiritually minded.
  7. When I take steps that honor God, He is delighted (Psalm 37:23).
  8. I want God to see faith before anything else. So, I filter what I say and what lodges in my heart so I don’t displease Him.
  9. I see God’s favor every time He confirms the work of my hands (Psalm 90:17).
  10. Because I’m God’s daughter, I want everything I do to reflect His character.

Pleasing God doesn’t come without hard work and seeking Him regularly. He’s an absolute gentleman and doesn’t force Himself on anyone. He wants me to come to Him freely and without reservation.

When I meet with Him, He refreshes me. He doesn’t require that I jump through hoops to satisfy Him. What’s important to Him is that I see Him as a loving Father.

And, God is the only one I can trust in this earthly life. His best is to give us the Kingdom (Luke 12:32) to live the abundant life Jesus brought to us.

Importance of Pleasing God as a Lifestyle

As humans, we think living to please God is impossible because He’s our Creator. What could we possibly do to make Him exceedingly glad?

It’s tempting to give up before you even start your “I’ll-please-God-Today list.” Just know that following your flesh is asking for trouble. Christians who rely on their strength always fail because they disconnect from God’s Spirit.

Seeking God with all your heart helps get you into God’s presence. Staying there ensures that you enter into His holy presence because you have access through the blood of the Lamb, Jesus your Lord and Savior.

Basically, the importance of pleasing God is defined by a single element. You make Him your top priority and don’t allow anything to come before Him in importance.
