House of Bread Scripture: 5 Ways It Defines Jesus

house of bread scripture

Has anyone ever walked up to you and quoted House of Bread scripture? Then, they pointed out those verses refer to Jesus. Not likely, but if they did it should get your attention.

In the Bible, Bethlehem means House Bread where Jesus was born.

Bethlehem, Arabic Bayt Laḥm (“House of Meat”), Hebrew Bet Leḥem (“House of Bread”)

The House of Bread meaning is so perfect because Jesus who is called Bread of Life and Bread of Heaven provides daily spiritual manna to sustain believers.

John 6:35 (AMP)

Jesus replied to them, “I am the Bread of Life. The one who comes to Me will never be hungry, and the one who believes in Me [as Savior] will never be thirsty [for that one will be sustained spiritually].

House of Bread Scripture and My House of No Food

When I first learned that Bethlehem is the House of Bread, a personal incident in my past immediately came to mind.

I took my responsibility as a mother faithfully. For those 18 years when our daughter lived with us, we focused on making sure she would stand on her own.  Some parents rejoice when their children leave. I grieved. Suddenly, my precious child was in college and STANDING ON HER OWN. We accomplished what we set out to do.

My behavior changed to deal with what for me was a loss. I stopped cooking. We laugh now but our house went through a period of famine. We joked about it being “the house of no food.”

After many years, I regained my sense of purpose and once again our dwelling became “the house of bread.” However, God transformed me during those quiet years of solitude. I became an intercessor and learned how to live a solitary life to receive bread from heaven.

Now, my holy temple where the Holy Spirit lives is not only a house of bread but a house of rain. God’s manna (words from heaven) rains down every day. I scoop up His abundance to give to others.

John 6:41 (AMP)

Now the Jews murmured and found fault with Him because He said, “I am the Bread that came down out of heaven.

Saint John 6:48-51 (AMP)

I am the Bread of Life [the Living Bread which gives and sustains life]. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the Bread that comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the Living Bread that came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this Bread [believes in Me, accepts Me as Savior], he will live forever. And the Bread that I will give for the life of the world is My flesh (body)

John 6:55-58 (AMP)

For My flesh is true [spiritual] food, and My blood is true [spiritual] drink.  He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood [believes in Me, accepts Me as Savior] remains in Me, and I [in the same way remain] in him.  Just as the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, even so the one who feeds on Me [believes in Me, accepts Me as Savior] will also live because of Me.  This is the Bread which came down out of heaven. It is not like [the manna that] our fathers ate and they [eventually] died; the one who eats this Bread [believes in Me, accepts Me as Savior] will live forever.”

John 6:35 (AMP)

Jesus replied to them, “I  am the Bread of Life. The one who comes to Me will never be hungry, and the one who believes in Me [as Savior] will never be thirsty [for that one will be sustained spiritually].

Matthew 26:26 (AMP)

Now as they were eating Jesus took bread, and after blessing it, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”

John 6:26-27 (AMP)

Jesus answered, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, you have been searching for Me, not because you saw the signs (attesting miracles), but because you ate the loaves and were filled.  Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures [and leads] to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you; for God the Father has authorized Him and put His seal on Him.”

How the House of Bread Defines Jesus

  1. It’s where Jesus’ ministry began. He arrived on earth as a baby which wasn’t what people expected. They wanted a king to march in and stop evil in its tracks.
  2. The House of Bread is synonymous with who Jesus is. He came down from heaven just as manna did in the wilderness to feed His people.
  3. Jesus is the Bread of Life. Without Him, your future is and looks bleak.
  4. Jesus is true spiritual food. Believers can try to sustain themselves with stuff but it never works. They’ll never be satisfied and always look for something better. Jesus is someone better.
  5. Earth’s bread perishes. Believers can align their lives with Jesus for eternity and never die.

Feeding on the Bread of Life

Do you like the smell of fresh-baked bread? Who doesn’t? Your mind tastes the bread before it ever reaches your mouth. You envision your bread piled high with butter and jam (or whatever else you like on top).

Do you have the same overwhelming desire for the Bread of Life – Jesus? Does He intoxicate your senses and move your spirit to seek after Him? After all, He’s the true bread from heaven.

How fitting. He offers Himself to us in so many ways—for our benefit. Feed on His desire for you as you reciprocate and feed on your desire for Him and want more of His words and presence. He’s essential for believers to survive. Don’t miss what He has for you.

Jesus Christ did not come into the world to assist you in meeting desires you already had before you were born again. He came into the world to change your desires so that he is the main one. That is the reason he came—John Piper.

I pray that Jesus overtakes you today, even more so than a hot slice of bread fresh from the oven.
