Going Deeper with God Every Minute
I started going deeper with God the more I sought Him. That vital connection caused me to love Him more. That hasn’t always been true. I used to mouth the words that I loved Him but people and stuff surfaced to the top above Him.
When I realized that awful truth, I repented and moved closer to God. Unfortunately, a lot of Christians don’t understand the importance of growing deeper in God. Here’s why all Christians should.
Go deeper with Him—because life is better.
The scripture below is the best example to show you what I mean. A total of 12 spies secretly spied out the land in Canaan. Two came back with a good report but the other 10 did not.
Numbers 14:7-9 (AMP)
The Good Report
The land through which we passed as spies is an exceedingly good land. If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land which [flows with milk and honey.] Only do not rebel against the Lord; and do not fear the people of the land, for they will be our prey. Their protection has been removed from them, and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them.”
Number 13:31-33 (AMP)
The Bad Report
But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people [of Canaan], for they are too strong for us.” So they gave the Israelites a bad report about the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we went, in spying it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants. And all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature. There we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”
Have you noticed when you don’t stay close to God, negative results follow?
Not Going Deeper with God Has Consequences
I love how scripture NEVER dodges the truth and teaches us how following God’s ways is always better.
Numbers 14:36-38 (AMP)
As for the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and who returned and made all the congregation murmur and complain against him by bringing back a bad report concerning the land, even those [ten] men who brought back the very bad report of the land died by a plague before the Lord. But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive out of those men who went to spy out the land.
A huge disconnect from God caused the disparity among the spies.
The 10 spies listened to their thoughts and acted on them. “We were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” They traveled to the Promised Land in secret yet alluded that the giants had seen them. That wasn’t true. Everyone’s reality was their truth. What they believed produced fear rather than trust God.
To say it more succinctly, Their “buts” got in the way of God’s truth.
On the other hand, Caleb and Joshua knew God would protect Israel. They were confident because of their solid and deep relationship with the one true God.
Guess what? People still let their thoughts lead them into danger.
Going Deeper with God Means No Excuses
- “Maybe I’ll publish a book—but.”
- “I’d like to live debt-free—but.”
- “I could start a business—but.”
God wants believers to launch out into the deep just as Caleb and Joshua did—and succeed.
BUT—it’s more comfortable to stay in shallow water so only your spiritual toes are wet and you fail to go deeper with God. I’ve been there and done that!
God may ask you to move with Him into unfamiliar territory. What ideas, plans, and purposes did He place in your heart to accomplish great things for His Kingdom but you ignored Him?
Do you sense God asking you to think big thoughts BUT what you want seems too big, maybe bigger than Him?
The 10 spies limited their vision by concentrating on what they saw. They failed to see with the eyes of faith like Caleb and Joshua. And, they prophesied their own results every time they neglected to spend time with God and believe His Word. Fear clouded their thoughts and drove their actions.
Going Deeper with God: How?
Do you hesitate to step out into the unknown because you don’t know how to go deeper with God?
For the last 10 years, God kept telling me to trust Him. I saw Him the same way I viewed people that hurt me. Of course, He’s not like that and He doesn’t need to prove Himself. That spiritual revelation helped me change my mindset about Him.
He understands that the flesh is our worst enemy. It convinces us that God is the enemy when Satan is the culprit whispering untruths into our minds to erode our confidence in God.
To go deeper with God, I did these things:
- Evaluated the thoughts and beliefs in my head. If they didn’t line up with who God is and what He says in His word, I sent them packing. I still do that.
- Meditated on scripture regularly. Christians BELIEVE. That’s our job. If we say we believe in Christ, what is it that we actually give credence to? How we live and what we say (during good times and bad) constitutes our faith.
- Removed myself from situations, people, news, etc. preventing me from going deeper with God. Worldly influencers are all around us. We decide what we allow inside our Holy Temples.
- Prayed in season and out. A lot of times Christians don’t feel like praying—that’s exactly the time to pray.
- Believed God was with me whether I felt His presence or not. He said He would never leave us (those who accept Jesus as Lord and Savior).
- Looked for ways to serve others. God is totally in love with people—the best of His creation. When we see people sin and blaspheme Him, we wonder why He loves us even a little bit. He sees what He created each person to be not what we are. His deep love for us is what drives Him to delay the events described in Revelation.
God is about to bring the world as we know it to an end. Unless you as a Christian know how to grow your relationship with God, you’ll falter and faint for lack of strength to endure what’s to come.
