Come Up Hither: 5 Ways You Can
When reading Revelation the words, “Come up hither” stood out for me along with God’s imagery and order of doing things. There are no words to describe His grandeur.
God spoke the following come up higher scripture to John the Revelator so he drew closer. He may ask you to do the same thing.
Revelation 4:1 (KJV)
After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will show you things which must be hereafter.
Spiritually, to come up hither means leaving for higher ground to meet God where He is. Once you get there, you won’t be disappointed but you may be surprised at His revelatory words. He lives on a totally different level of existence.
Why Come Up Hither with God?
Well, for one reason if He says so then do it. Another reason is to reach a new spiritual level in God’s Kingdom (Read my book, God Prods, about personal growth).
Christians tend to drag their feet holding on to their last vestige of self-reliance. Have you ever heard a toddler say, “I can do it myself!” You and I aren’t any different. We decide to hold tightly to all we know rather than let God teach us something different and better.
One morning I sensed God tugging on my heart to come up higher. I asked Him how to do that. He responded in an unexpected way.
He said, “Dance before me.”
I blurted out, “I can’t dance.”
God said, “You danced in your 20s.”
That was true. However, hormones raged, there was a live band, and I could move faster. My thoughts were similar to Moses and Jeremiah’s (I can’t talk and I’m too young).
So I agreed with God. I told Him it wouldn’t be pretty but I’d dance. The more I raised my hands and moved my feet, my spirit seemed as light as air. I went higher!
He may or may not ask me to dance again but one thing’s for sure. He knows how to bring each of us higher. Your part as His son or daughter is to listen and do what He says. We must go, not knowing where He takes us.
5 Ways to Come Up Hither in God
- Listen for God to speak: I do everything I can think of to go higher with God. That’s the problem. When God says come up higher, he wants you and me to listen for the Holy Spirit to tell us exactly what to do. He wants to get something to us by enlarging our spirits so we receive more revelation. Keep His Word before you at all times. The Word trains your spirit how to hear God. Put Bibles in your vehicles and rooms where you spend time the most and open them often.
- Decide to go deeper: God knows we’re never high enough because we don’t push through to the next level. On earth, nothing different happens in your life unless you actively make changes. The same is true spiritually. If you want to go higher you will and vice versa.
- Walk through the door: Revelation 4:1 indicates there’s an open door to heaven. We can peer through to see what’s on the other side and walk through it to draw closer to God. He simply asks you to come.
Two more ways to come up hither
- Be ready for God to share His thoughts: Isaiah 55:8-9 – “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts higher than your thoughts.” To know God’s thoughts and ways, you must stay in His presence. When you do, He talks more. There’s a reason He wants you close—to trust you with powerful secrets and spiritual truths.
- Expect life in every season: Jesus is our example. In Mark 11:12-14, he cursed a fig tree because it didn’t have fruit. The scripture indicates it wasn’t the season when fig trees bear fruit. Then, why did Jesus curse it? He ALWAYS expected fruit, no matter the season. He didn’t limit Himself to earthly seasons. Abundance for Him is ALWAYS in season. Believers can harvest at the most unlikely times by coming up higher to experience the fullness of Zoe life that flows from God to them. Another example: In Genesis 26:12, Isaac sowed in a land of famine (probably a drought) yet reaped 100 times what he planted.
When God Says Come Up Hither – Do It!
Going up may not be your first inclination if you hold on to every creature comfort you have. “Things” used to have great significance in my life. Every year, God gets bigger in my heart and pushes out stuff. I’m amazed at how He has changed me. However, it didn’t happen overnight and it ONLY happened when I surrendered to His ways and thoughts.
These days, I don’t live by a religious philosophy. I live by every Word God speaks whether it’s scripture, a heartfelt revelation, or truth the Holy Spirit speaks into my heart when praising, worshipping, or praying. I expect to go higher and stay there in spite of my lazy flesh pulling me away from God into carnality.
How about you?
Are you ready to walk through that open door into God’s presence? Actually, it’s quite simple. It involves preparing your heart to receive more of Him without reservation. In other words, no holding back.
The enemy of your heart tricks you into believing that God has no interest in you. That’s so untrue. This is what He thinks about you.
Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you,’ says the Lord, ‘plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
Revelation 21:2-3
And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, arrayed like a bride adorned for her husband; 3 and then I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “See! The tabernacle of God is among men, and He will live among them, and they will be His people, and God Himself will be with them [as their God,]
Does that sound like a God who doesn’t care about you? Go up higher dear child of God and receive everything He offers.
