There Shall Be Showers of Blessing: When?
Written by D. W. Whittle in 1883, There Shall Be Showers of Blessing reminds me of singing this hopeful song when growing up. The Showers of Blessing lyrics refer to promises of love, refreshing seasons, mercy drops, and the sound of abundant rain.
Do you ever look up to heaven and say to God, “When will showers of blessing come to my house? I’ve waited long enough. I want You to bless me exceedingly and abundantly—NOW?” When joy flees, rejection causes you to doubt, and the word triumph reminds you of a classic car your parents drove, it’s time to revisit what blessing means, according to God.
There Shall Be Showers of Blessing: What That Means to God
Only recently, God reminded me to bless others who cause the most heartache. I wasn’t on board with that. Why should I reward them for their bad behavior? But, that’s not what He meant. He wanted me to extend love toward them regardless of how they treated me.
From my viewpoint, I had blessed plenty of people without getting so much as a #Blessed in my inbox. God impressed upon me that to triumph over enemies (in my heart), I must bless them. If I do, what I call the law of blessings (similar to the law of gravity) boomerangs toward me.
Here’s the Biblical principle Jesus laid out in the Beatitudes.
Matthew 5:3-12
- Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
- Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
- Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
- Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
- Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
- Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
- Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
- Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
- Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Did you notice Jesus didn’t say anything about temporary earthly blessings? Dreams, marriages, loved ones, health, money, possessions, homes . . . you name it . . . can disappear in days, weeks, and months. Under those circumstances and the additional scriptures below, what should you expect to rain down torrentially?
Bible Verses Showers of Blessings
- Needs: “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus”, Philippians 4:19.
- Gifts: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change“, James 1:17.
- Peace: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace“, Numbers 6:24-26.
- Calmness: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand”, Isaiah 41:10.
- Abundance: “Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you“, Luke 6:38.
- Health: This isn’t a blessing that most people claim (they don’t look at health with spiritual eyes) but what Jesus did on the cross was a total package of salvation (body and soul). Everyone will die but they don’t have to be sick when they do. “Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul”, 3 John 1:2.
- Energy: “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint“, Isaiah 40:31.
There Shall Be Showers of Blessing: Don’t Forget These Verses!
- Hope: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope”, Romans 15:13.
- Richness (definition – plentiful quantities of something desirable): “The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it“, Proverbs 10:22.
- Protection: “No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall confute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord”, Isaiah 54:17.
- Fruitful: “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit”, Jeremiah 17:7-8.
- Sealed: “He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come“, 2 Corinthians 1:22.
In conclusion, this teaching on showers of blessing represents a small smattering of what’s available to someone who accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior. I resolved to bless others rather than look for blessings. I no longer sought the gifts but the Giver. When I bless someone that’s cantankerous, evil, or something else, my spirit soars.
Now’s the perfect time to dive into the Bible and find out what other showers of blessings await you. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your words change from “When God?” to “Give me more of You.”
